Quite often managers moan about under performance of employees. The environment, culture, development opportunities, rewards and recognition are important facets of an organisation that help shape employee performance. Environment is the organisational core that supports work. Most organisations create environments that act as comfort zones to attract employees. Attractive environments are no doubt necessary to motivate employees to come to work but they are not enough to motivate high performance. The workplace environment should not only be attractive and comfortable, it should also be challenging enough to inspire the employees to give their best. The performance standards of employees rise only when they truly enjoy what they do. Employees require opportunities to learn, grow and evolve.
Organisations recognise their employees need to constantly upgrade their skills and keep abreast of changing times. In the absence of opportunities to apply, most of the knowledge and skills gained become useless. Hence the organisations should plan and execute the employee development programmes in such a way that both the individual and the organisation benefit. Rewards and recognition play a significant role in boosting employee morale. Traditional models of performance appraisals, compensations and merit increases often fail to achieve the desired results. Professional growth and career planning are not accorded adequate importance in the traditional system. An organisational environment and a business culture that values, develops, motivates and rewards employees can bring about top class performance from its workforce.
The Public Sector General insurance companies are constantly lacking this behaviour. If these public sector companies aim for a developmental approach, and targeting an overall growth in this competitive environment, they should allow their employees to grow proportionately with the management. Ignoring this core group of employees and their aspirations will retard the future growth of this industry.
