Provide all means to staff to grow, evolve.....
While gone through the pages of my companies annual report, I noticed the companies vision of “highly motivated” and empowered employees, which made me think about myself and my batch of employees who joined 25 years back in this industry with an ambitious mind with a stack of aspirations. After covering Golden Jubilee in our life and Silver Jubilee in the Organisation, obviously an individual is expected to reach the level of Self Esteem. Whether this has happened in our lives; or we still struggling to meet the Basic Needs of life. My genuine doubt is, why one core group of employees doing the core functions of the industry(underwriting) are not getting the opportunities of eligible recognition and acceptance in their Organisation. Why they are “Fevisticked” in their entry cadre seat itself in their Silver Jubilee year of service in the Organisation. They are equally or more qualified and eligible than any of the so called “highly motivated and empowered employees”.
Quite often managers moan about under performance of employees. The environment, culture, development opportunities, rewards and recognition are important facets of an industry that help shape employee performance. Environment is the Organisational core that supports work. Most Organisations create environments that act as comfort zones to attract employees. Attractive environments are no doubt necessary to motivate employees to come to work but they are not enough to motivate high performance. The workplace environment should not only be attractive and comfortable, it should also be challenging enough to inspire the employees to give their best. The performance standards of employees rise only when they truly enjoy what they do. Employees require opportunities to learn, grow and evolve.
Organisations recognise their employees need to constantly upgrade their skills and keep abreast of changing times. In the absence of opportunities to apply, most of the knowledge and skills gained become useless. Hence the organisations should plan and execute the employee development programmes in such a way that both the individual and the Organisation benefit. Rewards and recognition play a significant role in boosting employee morale. Traditional models of performance appraisals, compensations and merit increases often fail to achieve the desired results. Professional growth and career planning are not accorded adequate importance in the traditional system. An Organisational environment and a business culture that values, develops, motivates and rewards employees can bring about top class performance from its workforce.
Whether this Public Sector General insurance companies are maintaining this behavior. If these public sector companies aim for a developmental approach, and targeting an overall growth in this competitive environment, they should recognise and motivate their employees to grow and evolve. Ignoring this core group of employees and their aspirations may retard the future growth of this industry.
Dr.A.P.J ABDULKALAM in his autobiography, narrated the behaviour seen in the Indian Organisations. Let me quote a paragraph from the book Wings of Fire “ What makes life in Indian Organisations difficult is the widespread prevalence of this contemptuous pride. It stops us from listening to our juniors, subordinates and people down the line. You cannot expect a person to deliver results if you humiliate him, nor can you expect him to be creative if you abuse him or despise him. The line between firmness and harshness, between strong leadership and bullying, between discipline and vindictiveness is very fine, but it has to be drawn. Unfortunately the only line prominently drawn in our country today is between the 'heroes' and the 'zeroes'. On one side are a few hundred heroes keeping nine hundred and fifty million people down on the other side. This situation has to be changed.
Yes this situation has to be changed!!!!
